 Concept of Watershed CP Watershed is a part of the land, where rain water or melted ice is captured as a drainage area and let out from a single exit to major rivers or streams. (Fig: 1) Technically, a watershed is the divide separating one drainage area from another (Chow, 1964).  Watershed or catchment area or drainage basin are terms used for part of the earth surface, where precipitation and stream or river water are collected and drained out to a bigger river, these terms are used depending on the size of the physiographic unit. For instance, India has 35 drainage basins, 112 catchment areas and 3237 watersheds (Watershed Atlas of India, AISLUS, 1990).  Precipitation that falls in a watershed ultimately reaches river system.     River Basin or Drainage Basin CP Each stream or river has its own drainage basin; a larger river system is made up of  all of the smaller streams and their respective drainage basins. Small streams flow  into larger streams, then rivers and finally, into the open bodies of water such as  the oceans, bays or seas.  The drainage basin of a larger river system is made up of  many branch like networks which strikingly resemble like the branches of a tree. It  starts at high elevation with first-order streams, which are small streams that  originate from springs.  First-order streams are where the system begins, and they  do not have any other streams flowing into them.  Next, there are second-order streams, which are streams that are created when two  first-order streams meet. India has an average annual precipitation of 4,000 billion cubic meters (BCM), making it the country's primary source of freshwater. National Water Policy National Water Policy was formulated in   1987  by the Ministry of Water Resources of the  Government of India, to govern the planning and development of water resources and their optimum utilization.  The policy was based on principles of conservation, protection,  management and regulation of the vital and stressed natural resource, which incorporated  legislative and executive actions on various levels of governance on water resource. Laying down the national water policy and to review it from time to time, is among the key roles  of NWRC. The NWRC adopted the first National Water Policy in September 1987.
